Family mediation voucher scheme | Legal Advice | Divorce.co.uk
The new Family Mediation Voucher Scheme launched by the Ministry of Justice aims to help more people access mediation. Couples can apply for the new £500 family mediation voucher that can be used towards the cost.Mediation is often a quicker and more cost-effective way of resolving family disputes, which can spare families the trauma of attending court and the impact this can have on children. It involves couples working through their differences – led by a trained mediator – to reach agreements they are both prepared to accept, such as how to split finances or arranging child contact times, rather than have a judge decide for them.Couples will be eligible for a voucher if they are looking to use mediation to help sort out arrangements about their children. Couples can find out more about the voucher scheme by speaking to one of our family mediators or at their Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM).Our mediation experienceWith 14 experienced family mediators and a national reputation for our work in mediation, Mills & Reeve LLP have signed up to this scheme and our mediators will be able to accept the voucher as payment towards the costs of mediation provided the eligibility criteria are met.For more information, please contact Alison BullFamily Mediation Voucher Scheme FAQs What is the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme? The scheme has been set up by the government in response to the Covid-19 pandemic to encourage more separating couples to consider mediation as a way to resolves issues they may have about their children at a time when there is unprecedented pressure on the family courts. The scheme is time-limited and will end when the budget allowed by the government for it has been reached. How do I apply for a mediation voucher? The mediator who conducts your Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) will discuss eligibility and availability of the vouchers with you. The MIAM has to have taken place on or after 26 March when the scheme started. If it took place before that date then unfortunately it''s not possible to apply retrospectively. What are the eligibility criteria? The mediation has to involve issues relating to arrangements about a child. As long as that applies the mediation can also cover financial matters. The voucher has to be used for the mediation itself. It cannot be used to pay for the MIAM. How do I get the voucher? If you decide to go ahead with mediation and are eligible your mediator will apply for the voucher. Can I get more than one voucher? No. It''s a one-off contribution. You can only claim once per family/case.
