Learning new skills is a great way to motivate yourself to improve your running. Becoming a competent navigator was one of the best things I did. I was able to get out on my own, train more and explore more.It also made me realise I was responsible for my own safety. As a consequence, I worked hard on becoming efficient over different sorts of terrain as well as constantly reflecting on how I could improve my skills to stay safe.Now, 15 years on from committing to learning those skills, I''ll be standing on a peak in full winter conditions, at night and on my own, comfortable and exhilarated. What a prize for all that hard work!
