At approximately 344,400km2, the Great Barrier Reef is so large it can be seen from outer space. To put that into perspective, it’s larger than the United Kingdom, Netherlands and Switzerland combined, or roughly as large as Japan, Germany or Italy, or about half the size of Texas.Located in the Coral Sea off the north Queensland coast, and comprising some 3,000 coral reefs and 600 continental islands, the Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and is home to an incredibly diverse ecosystem that stretches around 2,300km (about the length of the North American west coast from Vancouver to the Mexican border). If you drove the length of the Great Barrier Reef following the coastline, it would take you around 43 hours from Bundaberg in the south to Bamaga in the the north.So it is definitely not a destination you can squeeze in as a day trip from, say, Sydney (which is about 1766km away as the crow flies, if you’re wondering). To get the most out of the reef, you’ll want to stay at one of the major cities along the north Queensland coast such as Cairns, Airlie Beach or Bundaberg or, even better, stay on one of the many beautiful islands themselves.Just imagine coasting out to and from one of the 100+ islands offering everything from a castaway-style remote island adventure to an all-in resort escape. Take a day. Take two or more. Bask in the sunshine on a deck in the middle of the reef. Spot marine mammals (like dolphins or the vulnerable dugong) and turtles from a sailing boat. Immerse yourself snorkeling and come face to face with colorful corals and curious fish (like Nemo’s Ocellaris Clownfish and Dory’s Blue Tang).Or go deeper and scuba dive around the wrecks and ancient outer reefs. Stay dry and marvel at the underwater world in a glass-bottom boat, or take to the sky with a jaw-dropping scenic flight that will really put the reef’s scale and beauty into perspective. Sip a cocktail and watch the sun set from a soft, sandy perch.
