Wine & VineThe free draining iron-rich Matakana clay, warm maritime climate, and superb northerly aspect at Ascension have produced wines that are both widely acclaimed in the press, and keenly sought by wine enthusiasts. Planted in 1996, our four hectares of Ascension’s Vines was one of the first vineyards in the Matakana region. Although young by world standards, we have a selection of traditional and unusual grape varieties plated onsite. The grape varieties cultivated are Merlot, Malbec, Pinotage, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, Tannat, Syrah, Chardonnay, Flora, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc. Also we make our own Sparkling Wine, Port and very popular Rose. As purity is essential to us, we believe in the traditional old European ways. Our Vines are pruned and our grapes picked by the very hands of our dedicated vineyard team to produce small intensely flavored crops.
