RACHEL FOOKS ~ Ceramics – Unique ceramics inspired by nature & pottery classes for all abilities.
”Working with clay is fun, surprising, experimental, evolving and limitless… I hope that my work reflects this.”Hello, and a very warm welcome to my website.I’m an established ceramicist who enjoys pushing creative boundaries. Over the years I’ve built a solid reputation for creating quality contemporary ceramics, and am recognised for regularly changing my style and creating exciting new bodies of work. The inspiration for my pottery comes from studying the natural environment of Purbeck in Dorset, where I’m very fortunate to have lived for most of my life. I love spending time exploring the array of footpaths and bridleways – sketching and taking photographs which I later use in my pottery. It’s great fun to juxtapose the forms, patterns and textures that I find along the stunning Jurassic coastline, the meadows, heath land and gnarly ancient woodland. Whilst my inspiration remains the same, everything I make is a ‘one off’. It’s very important to me that the people who buy my pottery get something truly unique. To see some examples of my ceramics, go to my ‘Gallery page. The Pottery StudioThe pottery forms part of Furzebrook Studios – a lovely artist and crafts community which I set up in 2017. There’s always an abundance of creativity in the building which people find hugely inspiring. I have a pottery studio where I make my ceramic creations, but also an adjoining designated teaching space – just for you to enjoy! It’s a warm, bright and airy room, well equipped with plenty of space to get creative with clay. Furzebrook Studios is perfectly positioned just outside of Wareham in Dorset, nestled next to Stoborough Heath Nature Reserve but not far from the main road. It’s a calm and tranquil place to be – it’s not uncommon to see deer grazing outside the pottery studio window, hear cuckoos calling in Spring and woodpeckers tapping away in the trees.Pottery ClassesAs well as creating my own pottery, I have been running pottery classes for over 15 years. Most people who come to the pottery classes are hobby potters looking for a creative outlet and to make friends, but a few have gone on to become professional potters. The Weekly Pottery Classes offer you the opportunity to get creative with clay in a very friendly and relaxed environment. I pride myself on creating a very informal setting where everyone is made to feel welcome, valued and not judged. All of the pottery classes are suitable for all abilities – for those new to pottery, the classes provide the skills and knowledge needed to successfully work with clay, and for those who’ve used clay before, the opportunity to develop ideas and techniques further. As well as working in the pottery studio, I make use of the beautiful outside space. When the weather is good, we have fun with Raku firings and experiment with other alternative firing techniques like barrel firing. This often provides the perfect excuse to share food and drink to make the day feel really special.People who attend the weekly pottery classes come from all over Dorset – including Poole, Bournemouth, Dorchester, Blandford and Purbeck (Wareham, Corfe Castle and Swanage). Amazingly, I have people come from further afield – Bridport in one direction and Brighton in the other!During the last few years, I’ve witnessed a massive surge of interest in pottery classes and in particular, ‘throwing’ on the potters wheel. The More4 program ‘The Great Pottery Throw Down’ made a huge impact on people. To satisfy this new nationwide craving for pottery, I offer a ‘Pottery Throwing or Hand building Experience‘ which has become more popular than I ever thought possible! When I get too busy with bookings, I get the help of Alan White, the Master potter from Poole Pottery to lend me a hand. His throwing skills are incredible!One-off Pottery Sessions are also available for groups, birthday, hen and stag parties. These are great fun and it’s always lovely to see what gets made in these sessions. People are so creative! All of the details about the pottery classes that I offer can be found on the Pottery Class page or please feel free to contact me [email protected]Rachel Fooks ~Ceramicist, pottery tutor, gardener, wildlife enthusiast and most importantly proud Mother of 2 amazing daughters.
