About Chinook Book

The Chinook trade jargon (Chinook Wawa) arose as a mixture of words from the various Pacific Northwest tribes who would congregate near Celilo Falls in the Columbia River Gorge to trade, fish, connect and celebrate. As new traders started to arrive in the region from France, England, China, and the East Coast, the jargon added words from those new languages. A book was ultimately compiled and widely circulated among the peoples of the Pacific Northwest to facilitate communication and commerce throughout the region. Although we are now a mobile app available throughout the United States, our mission of facilitating sustainable trade, communication and celebration is still closely aligned with the original goals of that first Chinook Book. Our conversation with tribal elders when the company founded centered closely on the shared goals of fostering protection of the earth’s resources through trade.
